How to Market Advanced Learner Loan Funded Courses and Fill Every Intake

The Advanced Learner Loan is the strongest selling point for funded beauty courses — but most providers don't use it properly in their marketing. Here's what to do instead.

The loan removes the biggest barrier — but only if learners know about it

The Advanced Learner Loan covers the full cost of approved Level 3+ qualifications. The learner pays nothing upfront. Repayments only start when they earn above the threshold. For most people considering beauty, nail or aesthetics training, this is the difference between "I can't afford it" and "when does the next course start?"

The problem: providers don't explain it properly

What providers sayWhat learners hear
"Funding available""I probably don't qualify"
"Government-funded course""Sounds too good to be true"
"Eligible for Advanced Learner Loan""I don't know what that is"
"Train for free with no upfront cost — repay only when earning over £25,000""I can afford this"

The last option fills courses. The others don't.

Which qualifications are Advanced Learner Loan eligible?

Level 3 and above qualifications at designated providers. The main funded beauty, aesthetics and hair qualifications include:

  • Level 3: Beauty therapy, nail technology, hairdressing, barbering, massage therapy, holistic therapies, makeup artistry
  • Level 4: Aesthetics, laser/IPL, micropigmentation, salon management, sports massage
  • Level 5-6: Advanced aesthetics
  • Level 7 is NOT loan-funded (always self-funded)

Providers must be designated for each specific qualification — check the DfE "Find a learning aim" database.

Frequently asked questions

How do I market Advanced Learner Loan courses?

Explain the loan in plain language: no upfront cost, repayments only when earning above the threshold, covers the full course fee. Avoid vague terms like 'funding available.' Screen for loan eligibility early in the process.

What beauty courses are funded by the Advanced Learner Loan?

Level 3+ qualifications at designated providers: beauty therapy, nail technology, hairdressing, barbering, aesthetics, laser/IPL, micropigmentation, massage therapy and holistic therapies. The provider must be specifically designated for each qualification.

How do I get more learners for my funded courses?

Explain the loan clearly in every touchpoint — ads, landing pages, follow-up messages. Most potential learners don't know the loan exists. Making it clear and simple is the single biggest lever for increasing funded course enrolments.
